Electromagnetic Flow Meter

Product Overview

An industrial electromagnetic flow meter measures the volumetric flow rate of conductive liquids based on Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction. Featuring an unobstructed, full-bore flow path with no moving parts, the meter creates zero pressure drop and prevents mechanical wear when handling abrasive slurries or fibrous wastewater.

Units are available in compact and remote configurations, paired with multi-parameter digital converters supporting standard industrial communication protocols for direct PLC and SCADA integration.

Measurement & Testing Principle

The meter operates on Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction. Pulsed DC magnetic coils integrated into the sensor body generate a stable magnetic field. As a conductive fluid (conductivity >= 5 uS/cm) moves through the magnetic field at velocity v, an electromotive force E is induced across the electrodes, which is directly proportional to the mean flow velocity:
E = k * D * B * v
E: Induced voltage
k: Meter constant
D: Distance between electrodes (inner diameter)
B: Magnetic field strength
v: Average fluid velocity
The microprocessor-based converter samples the electrode signal, applies digital filtering algorithms to reject electrochemical noise, and computes the net volumetric flow rate.

Applications

Water & Wastewater

Raw water intakes, aeration basins, effluent discharge compliance monitoring, municipal district metering.

Chemical Processing

Acid and caustic chemical dosing skids, cooling tower makeup lines, and transfer loops for corrosive salt solutions.

Pulp & Paper

Stock preparation lines, chemical recovery circuits, white and black liquor handling.

Mining & Minerals

Low-abrasion slurry transport lines and utility water loops.

Installation & Operating Considerations

Flanged-end Electromagnetic Flow Meter

Straight Pipe Requirements

To achieve fully developed flow profiles, install with a minimum of 5 x DN upstream and 2 x DN downstream straight pipe lengths.

Insertion Type Electromagnetic Flow Meter

Full Pipe Condition

The measuring tube must remain completely filled with liquid during operation. Vertical upward flow configurations are recommended for lines prone to partial filling.

Flanged-end Electromagnetic Flow Meter

Potential Equalization & Grounding

Grounding rings or reference electrodes are mandatory when installing on plastic, lined, or non-conductive pipelines to eliminate stray electrical currents.

Selection Guide

To specify the correct electromagnetic flow meter for your project, verify the following parameters:

Fluid Properties: Check chemical compatibility, presence of abrasive solids, and verify electrical conductivity (>= 5 uS/cm).

Pipeline Metrics: Match nominal pipe size (DN) and flange pressure class to the existing piping design.

Temperature & Liner Selection: Choose PTFE/PFA for aggressive chemicals and higher thermal limits; choose rubber/polyurethane for standard water and mild slurries.

Electrode Metallurgy: Specify 316L for standard water; upgrade to Hastelloy C or Titanium for corrosive acids or oxidizing agents.

Control Architecture: Confirm operating voltage and required communication protocol (HART, Modbus, 4-20mA loop).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the minimum fluid conductivity required for this meter to operate accurately?

A: The fluid must have a minimum electrical conductivity of 5 uS/cm for general water applications, and 20 uS/cm for demineralized water. Hydrocarbons, petroleum oils, and pure gases cannot be measured using electromagnetic flow measurement principles.

Q: How does pipeline vibration affect measurement accuracy, and how can it be mitigated?

A: Severe mechanical vibration induces electrical noise in the electrode loop, leading to output signal fluctuation. This is mitigated by installing rigid pipe supports adjacent to the meter, selecting a remote configuration (EMF-R Series) to decouple the converter electronics from the vibration source, and activating adjustable digital damping filters in the converter settings.

Q: Can this meter handle slurries or liquids with suspended solids?

A: Yes. The obstructionless full-bore design allows slurries, sludge, and wastewater containing suspended solids to pass freely without generating pressure loss or mechanical wear. However, fluid velocity should be maintained between 1 m/s and 3 m/s to prevent heavy solids from settling out or causing premature abrasive wear on the liner.

Q: What is the operational difference between rubber, polyurethane, and PTFE liners?

A: Hard Rubber / Polyurethane: Offers excellent abrasion resistance against raw water, wastewater, and mining slurries, with operating temperatures up to +60°C or +80°C.
PTFE / PFA: Provides superior chemical resistance against concentrated acids, bases, and aggressive solvents, handling fluid temperatures up to +140°C with vacuum-resistant structural reinforcement.

Q: Are individual calibration certificates provided with the shipment?

A: Yes. Every flow meter is individually wet-calibrated on a gravimetric or volumetric test bench. A formal calibration report detailing test points, actual errors, and calibration coefficients is packaged inside the documentation box.

Q: What causes zero drift, and how is it corrected during operation?

A: Zero drift is typically caused by electrode contamination (e.g., grease accumulation, biological scaling, or mineral deposits) or shifting ground noise. It is corrected by running a zero-adjustment routine when the pipeline is completely filled and stationary, or by physically removing and cleaning the sensor electrodes if heavy scaling is present.
